Google Ads for Home Decor Brands in India: 4x ROAS Case Study for a D2C Décor Business on Shopify

Home décor is one of the most visual categories in Indian D2C ecommerce. A buyer doesn't purchase a handmade terracotta vase or a hand-block-printed wall hanging based on a product title — they purchase because they can picture it in their home. This Jaipur-based artisan home décor brand — selling hand-painted pots, macramé wall hangings, cane furniture accessories, and traditional Indian decorative pieces — wanted to scale beyond design exhibitions and Jaypore listings. In 4 months with a ₹1.25 lakh monthly budget, we delivered 4x ROAS — ₹20 lakh in revenue from ₹5 lakh spend.
About the Brand
The brand's catalogue includes 400+ décor pieces across categories: wall art, tabletop décor, planters, storage, and seasonal festive décor. Products range from ₹399 to ₹8,999, with an average order value of ₹1,650. Customers are primarily urban women aged 25–45 who are actively designing or upgrading their homes. The brand had a Shopify store with beautiful photography but minimal paid traffic.
The Challenge
Home décor buyers on Google search both broadly ('wall art for living room India') and very specifically ('terracotta planter set of 3'). The broad terms have high volume but low commercial intent — many browsers, few buyers. The specific terms have lower volume but very high purchase intent and low CPCs. Building a campaign structure that captures the specific intent without ignoring the broader discovery layer was the core strategic challenge.
Our Strategy
We built a two-layer approach: Shopping and Search captured specific product intent while PMax expanded reach into the discovery layer using Google's inventory — Display, YouTube, and Gmail. Every dollar of broad targeting was only approved if it hit a ROAS threshold. When it did, we scaled. When it didn't, we cut it and reinvested in what was working. This disciplined allocation kept overall ROAS at 4x even during periods of exploratory budget expansion.
Campaign Architecture
Google Shopping — Category Architecture
Shopping was structured by décor category (wall art, planters, tabletop, storage) and price band. The brand's extensive catalogue made this a high-volume Shopping opportunity — over 400 SKUs all with quality product photography. We prioritised high-margin categories (wall art, premium planters) and suppressed low-margin utility items. Shopping drove 40% of conversions with precise buyer intent matching.
Performance Max — Home Design Audience Signals
PMax asset groups: Boho & Artisan Décor, Festive & Seasonal Pieces, and Functional Storage & Organisers. Audience signals targeted home interior enthusiasts, people who had recently searched home renovation terms, and followers of Indian interior design content. PMax expanded reach significantly and drove 50% of total conversions.
YouTube — Room Styling Showcases
30-second product-in-context videos showing the décor pieces styled in actual homes — a gallery wall with the brand's prints, a bookshelf styled with their terracotta planters. Targeted to home décor YouTube viewers and site visitors who hadn't purchased. Drove 10% of conversions with the highest average order value in the account (₹2,100 per order vs ₹1,650 site average).
CRO — Visual-First Landing Pages
BYPL pages for top-performing product categories led with room-setting hero images — not white-background product shots. Each page included: multiple lifestyle images, a 'how to style this' section with décor pairing suggestions, dimensions and material details, customer photos in their homes, and a room filter to help buyers visualise the product in their specific space. GoKiwi showed real purchase notifications. Conversion rate improved from 1.2% to 3.1%.

Key Takeaways
In home décor, the product photography is the campaign. Brands with professional lifestyle imagery — products shot in actual rooms, not on white backgrounds — consistently outperform those without it, regardless of how well the ads are structured. The 3.1% conversion rate we achieved on lifestyle-shot product pages would likely be under 1.5% on white-background pages for the same products. If you're in a visual category and haven't invested in lifestyle photography, that is your highest-ROI marketing spend before you touch ad budget.
