Google Ads for Pooja Items & Festival Products: How a Religious Gifting Brand Generated 5x ROAS

India's festival and religious gifting market is enormous — and deeply seasonal. Navratri, Diwali, Karva Chauth, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, and a dozen regional festivals each create distinct buying windows. A Mumbai-based brand selling pooja thalis, diyas, puja kits, festive hampers, and traditional lamps came to Ho Digital wanting to move beyond Etsy and Indian arts-and-crafts marketplaces. In one campaign season covering Navratri and Diwali, with a ₹3 lakh total budget, we generated 5x ROAS — ₹15 lakh in revenue.
About the Brand
The brand designs and handcrafts pooja essentials — brass diyas, decorated thalis, complete puja kits, and Diwali gifting hampers — all priced between ₹349 and ₹3,999. They had a loyal Instagram community and strong repeat customers but had never run paid digital advertising at scale. Their Shopify store existed primarily as an order fulfilment platform — not a traffic acquisition channel.
The Challenge
Festival product demand is intensely concentrated. 80% of the annual revenue for a brand like this comes from a 6–8 week window across Navratri and Diwali. Campaigns had to be planned and launched 3–4 weeks before the festival window opened, scaled aggressively during peak demand, and then wound down efficiently to avoid wasted spend after the season ended. The window for error was extremely small.
The brand also had to compete with mass retailers — Big Basket, Amazon, D-Mart — who stock generic puja items at ₹99. The differentiation story had to be about authenticity, craftsmanship, and gifting value — not price.
Our Strategy
We structured the campaign around two parallel objectives: capturing gifting intent (people buying for others) and devotional purchase intent (people buying for their own home). Gift buyers respond to pack value, presentation, and occasion — so we led with hamper products and 'gifting' framing. Devotional buyers care about authenticity, material quality, and religious tradition — we led with brass, handmade, and traditional craft storytelling. Different ads, different landing pages, different bids for each buyer type.
Campaign Architecture
Performance Max — Festival Calendar Timed
We launched PMax 3 weeks before Navratri with two asset groups: Festival Gifting Hampers and Home Puja Essentials. Audience signals targeted buyers interested in Indian traditions, Hindu festivals, home décor, and gifting. Budget was increased 2.5x in the final 10 days before Diwali — the single highest conversion window. PMax contributed 60% of all conversions.
Google Shopping — Occasion-Specific Labels
Custom labels by festival (Navratri, Diwali, general puja) and by recipient type (self-use vs. gifting). Shopping allowed granular bid control — we ramped up bids on Diwali gift sets and diyas in the 72-hour pre-Diwali window, where conversion rates spike significantly but advertisers who don't plan ahead miss the opportunity entirely.
YouTube — Festival Atmosphere Creative
15-second YouTube bumper ads showing the products being used in actual Diwali and Navratri puja settings — warm lighting, family gatherings, beautifully arranged thalis. Targeted to in-market festival shoppers and devotional content viewers. Running from 3 weeks before Diwali through the final day, these bumpers created repeat brand exposure that shortened the decision window for retargeted visitors.
CRO — Gift-Focused Landing Pages
BYPL pages featured: curated hamper visuals (not just product images — full gifting context), delivery date guarantee prominently displayed (critical for festival deadlines), gift wrapping option at checkout, and personalised message card add-on. GoKiwi urgency nudges showed 'Only 12 Diwali hampers left' during peak days. Conversion rate moved from 1.5% to 4.3%.

Key Takeaways
Festival ecommerce rewards brands that plan early. The campaigns that hit the highest ROAS during Diwali are almost always the ones that started building audience lists, testing creatives, and optimising landing pages 3–4 weeks before the first rupee of peak-season budget went live. Last-minute campaigns compete in the most expensive auction window without any learning period — and pay 2–3x higher CPCs for the privilege. Planning is the real competitive advantage in seasonal D2C.
