Selling perfume online has an inherent problem: you can't smell it through a screen. Fragrance is arguably the hardest D2C category to convert because the primary purchase signal — scent — is unavailable online. A Mumbai-based artisan perfume brand selling alcohol-based EDPs, attar concentrates, and seasonal fragrance discovery sets came to Ho Digital wanting to crack the D2C channel. In 4 months on a ₹1.25 lakh monthly budget, we generated 4x ROAS — ₹20 lakh in revenue from ₹5 lakh spend.

About the Brand

The brand creates small-batch perfumes inspired by Indian botanicals — jasmine, sandalwood, oud, rose, vetiver — in both modern EDP formats (₹1,299–₹4,999 for 50ml) and traditional attar concentrates (₹499–₹2,499 for 6ml). They also sell discovery sets — 5 × 2ml samples — priced at ₹699. Average order value is ₹1,650. They had strong Instagram traction but a Shopify store that was underperforming on paid traffic.

The Challenge

The core challenge: nobody can trial the fragrance before buying. The solution to this is trust-building through three proxies — detailed fragrance descriptions that create olfactory imagination, social proof from buyers who describe the scent in reviews, and a discovery set that removes the full-bottle commitment from the first purchase. Every element of the campaign and landing page had to solve this one fundamental problem.

Our Strategy

We structured the funnel around the discovery set as the entry point. Instead of trying to convert cold traffic directly to a ₹2,500 full-size EDP, we drove first-time buyers to the ₹699 discovery set — a low-commitment, high-curiosity entry product. Once buyers sampled and chose a favourite, remarketing drove them back for full-bottle purchases at a much higher conversion rate and AOV. This two-step acquisition funnel changed the economics of the entire paid channel.

Campaign Architecture

Performance Max — Fragrance Occasion Audiences

Three asset groups: Daily Wear Fragrances, Occasion & Evening Wear, and Gifting Discovery Sets. Audience signals targeted luxury lifestyle enthusiasts, occasion planners (weddings, parties), and people who had researched premium Indian fragrance brands. PMax drove 52% of all conversions, with discovery sets being the most frequent first purchase.

Search — Scent Family Keywords

Search campaigns structured around scent families and occasions: 'oud perfume India', 'Indian sandalwood EDP', 'jasmine attar concentrate', 'best perfume for office wear women India'. Scent family keywords attracted buyers with a clear fragrance preference — allowing ad copy to speak directly to their olfactory vocabulary rather than generic 'best perfume' messaging.

YouTube — Fragrance Mood Storytelling

30-second visual poetry ads — no product shots, pure sensory storytelling. Jasmine flowers, rain on earth, cedar forests at dusk — visual metaphors for the fragrance's character. No price, no product name in the first 20 seconds. These ads consistently drove the highest assisted conversion rate in the account, particularly for the premium EDP range.

CRO — Olfactory Description Pages

BYPL pages for each fragrance included: a detailed olfactory journey (top notes, heart notes, base notes written as prose, not a spec list), the story behind the inspiration, 'who wears this' personality profiles, 200+ reviews with scent description keywords from buyers, and a 'Complete the Ritual' bundle with the discovery set. First-time buyers were shown the discovery set add-on at checkout. Conversion rate moved from 1.0% to 2.9%.

Key Takeaways

The discovery set strategy turned fragrance's biggest weakness into its strongest acquisition mechanic. Instead of fighting the 'can't smell it' objection with longer copy, we removed it entirely by making the first purchase a ₹699 sampler. 46% of new customers entered through the discovery set, and 31% converted to a full bottle within 30 days. That's an acquisition-to-repeat funnel that works with the nature of the product, not against it. If your category has a trial barrier, design your product entry point around solving it — don't try to overcome it with ad copy.
