Google Ads for Whey Protein & Health Supplements: How a D2C Nutrition Brand Achieved 5x ROAS on Their Own Website

India's sports nutrition and health supplement market is growing at 15% annually. But it's also brutally competitive on Google — MuscleBlaze, HealthKart, MyProtein, GNC, and dozens of smaller brands all bid aggressively on the same high-intent search terms. For a bootstrapped D2C nutrition brand to win profitably on Google, they need to outmanoeuvre on targeting and outconvert on their website — not outspend. A Pune-based brand selling whey protein, mass gainers, BCAAs, pre-workouts, and multivitamins came to Ho Digital for exactly this. In 4 months with a ₹1.75 lakh monthly budget, we generated 5x ROAS — ₹35 lakh in revenue from ₹7 lakh spend.

About the Brand

The brand sells clean-ingredient supplements — whey protein with no fillers, BCAAs with pharmaceutical-grade purity, and plant-based protein for vegetarian athletes. Products range from ₹799 for single-ingredient supplements to ₹4,999 for premium 5kg whey protein packs. Average order value is ₹2,100. Their positioning: transparent ingredient labels, third-party lab tested, no proprietary blends that hide underdosed actives.

The Challenge

Generic supplement terms — 'whey protein India', 'BCAA supplement buy' — are dominated by well-funded brands with massive Google ad budgets. Competing on these terms meant paying ₹60–₹120 per click against brands with 10x the budget. We needed a targeting strategy that found buyers already looking for what made this brand different — clean ingredients, no proprietary blends, lab-tested purity — rather than competing in the most expensive auction windows.

Our Strategy

We built the campaign around ingredient transparency and quality signals. Keywords included qualifier terms: 'no proprietary blend protein', 'lab tested whey protein India', 'clean ingredient supplements', 'whey isolate no fillers'. These terms attracted buyers who had already done enough research to know what they were looking for — the most qualified, highest-intent buyers in the entire supplement category. We also built a subscription acquisition funnel, because the LTV of a monthly subscriber is 5–7x the value of a one-time buyer.

Campaign Architecture

Search — Quality & Transparency Keywords

Separate ad groups for each product category with quality-qualifier keywords: whey protein (isolate vs concentrate, lab tested, no fillers), plant protein (vegan, soy-free), BCAAs (2:1:1 ratio, pharmaceutical grade), pre-workout (no proprietary blend, fully disclosed formula). Lower CPCs than generic terms, 3x the buyer quality. Search drove 32% of conversions with the lowest CPA in the account.

Performance Max — Fitness Audience Segments

Three PMax asset groups: Whey Protein & Recovery (strength trainers), Endurance & Weight Management (runners, cyclists, weight loss seekers), and Plant-Based & Wellness (vegetarian athletes, health-conscious). Audience signals targeted gym members, fitness content consumers, sports nutrition research audiences, and Custom Intent audiences built around supplement comparison and review queries. PMax drove 55% of total conversions.

YouTube — Ingredient Transparency Creative

A 45-second 'What's Actually in Your Protein?' video — walking through a competitor's proprietary blend label versus the brand's fully disclosed formula. No brand-bashing, just education. Targeted to supplement buyers who had searched competitor brands and to fitness YouTube audiences. This creative drove the highest subscribe-on-first-purchase rate of any YouTube creative we've tested in this category.

CRO — Subscription-First Conversion Stack

BYPL pages led with the subscription option — ₹1,799/month Subscribe & Save vs ₹1,999 one-time. Key conversion elements: full ingredient label with active amounts disclosed, lab certificate download, third-party testing badge, protein per serving calculator (grams of protein per rupee vs leading competitors — showing the brand's value clearly), and a 30-day return guarantee. GoKiwi showed subscription count and recent orders. Conversion rate moved from 1.5% to 4.1%, with 38% of first-time buyers choosing subscription.

Key Takeaways

In a competitive supplement category, you cannot win on generic keyword bids. The brands that win profitably on Google in this space target buyers who have already moved past 'which protein should I buy' and are now asking 'which clean-ingredient brand is worth trusting'. Those buyers convert at higher rates, have higher AOV, and are far more likely to subscribe. Build your keyword strategy around your differentiation, not the category's highest-volume terms — even if volume is lower, the ROAS will be substantially better.
