Dog food is one of the most emotionally charged D2C categories on Meta — pet parents are deeply invested in their dogs' health and will spend significantly when they trust a brand. But trust has to be earned through the creative, not claimed through the ad copy. This Delhi NCR natural dog food brand had excellent retention and strong reviews but a Meta Ads strategy that wasn't finding or converting new buyers at the right cost. Ho Digital rebuilt it.

About the Brand

The brand sells grain-free, natural dog food and treats directly through their Shopify store — targeting pet parents making the switch from mass-market kibble brands. Once acquired, their retention was exceptional: 68% of customers reordered within 60 days. But the acquisition funnel was broken — CAC was ₹680 and ROAS stuck at 2.5x.

Like most D2C brands running on Shopify, their paid acquisition costs were also being pushed up by having no organic search presence to lean on — a Shopify-specific organic search strategy running alongside Meta spend is usually the cheaper long-term fix.

The Real Problem: Wrong Audience and No Retention Loop

The brand was targeting "grain-free dog food" and premium pet food interest audiences — a tiny, expensive, highly competitive segment already loyal to established brands. They were advertising inside an echo chamber of buyers who weren't looking to switch. Creatives were product-focused (ingredient callouts, feeding guides) rather than emotionally resonant — missing the core truth that pet parents buy on emotion, not labels.

The missed opportunity: their LTV was enormous (repeat buyers, 68% reorder rate) but Meta Ads treated every purchase as a one-time event. There was no subscription upsell funnel, no cross-sell retargeting for existing buyers, and no campaign to encourage the first-time buyer to become a regular. Fixing LTV mechanics was as important as fixing acquisition.

Our Meta Ads Strategy for Dog Food Brand in India

Phase 1: Broad PMF Testing Beyond the Echo Chamber

We dramatically broadened targeting: all pet owners (broad), dog breed community interests, dog health and wellbeing, "new pet parent" life event signals, and families with pets. Six creative formats tested simultaneously: emotional health transformation stories, "first meal reaction" dog videos, vet recommendation clips, "what's in your dog's food?" challenge hooks, before/after coat/energy health, and owner-shot mealtime content. Budget: ₹10,000/day for 10 days.

This structured six-creative testing framework — emotional, social proof, curiosity, and authority angles tested simultaneously rather than sequentially — is what let us find the winning format in 10 days instead of 30

Phase 2: Pet UGC Scaled with Advantage+ Shopping

Dog UGC dramatically outperformed all brand-created assets — specifically "first meal reaction" videos and "30-day health transformation" owner content. We moved the top 4 UGC creatives into Advantage+ Shopping at ₹25,000/day and built a dedicated "starter pack" offer landing page to reduce the risk of a first purchase for new audiences unfamiliar with grain-free feeding.

Phase 3: Subscription Retargeting Funnel for LTV

We built a post-purchase subscription funnel: first-time buyers were entered into a retargeting sequence starting 8 days after their first order (timed to when the food supply would be running low), offering a subscription with 20% off and a flexible pause option. Existing single-purchase buyers were retargeted with complementary products — treats, dental chews, joint supplements. This subscription layer alone improved customer LTV by 2.8x over 90 days.

Creative Strategy: Emotional Pet UGC and Vet-Endorsed Content

Hooks That Trigger Pet Parent Emotion

"My golden retriever's coat completely transformed in 3 weeks after we switched. Here's the before and after." — emotional health transformation, 3.3% CTR and highest purchase conversion rate. "What's actually in your dog's food? I read the label on 5 brands and was genuinely shocked." — fear-based concern hook, 3.9% CTR (highest volume), best for cold awareness. "Our vet told us to look for these 3 ingredients in dog food. This is the only brand that had all of them." — borrowed veterinary authority, shortened the trust gap dramatically for premium price positioning.

Pet Owner UGC — The Organic Conversion Engine

We sourced UGC from 25 existing customers — dog reaction videos, health transformation documentation, and owner testimonials. "First meal reaction" videos (dogs excitedly eating the new food) were semi-viral, with multiple organic shares across pet parent communities adding unpaid reach on top of our paid campaigns. Each UGC asset cost under ₹500 to produce (voucher credit) and generated 4x+ ROAS when amplified through paid campaigns.

Brands without an existing customer base large enough to source UGC internally can run this through a dedicated UGC creator sourcing sprint instead of a full retainer.

Vet and Pet Creator Partnership Ads

We partnered with 2 veterinary nutritionist creators and 5 pet lifestyle influencers (20K–200K followers) on Instagram and Facebook. Vet Partnership Ads ran from the veterinarians' accounts with their professional credibility front and centre — reducing the trust gap for health-focused claims that brand ads cannot credibly make. CPM for vet Partnership Ads was 24% lower than our own brand ad sets.

Results After 90 Days

Ad Spend: ₹80K/month | Revenue: ₹3.2L/month | ROAS: 4x | CAC: ₹680 → ₹290 | Subscription Rate: 3x higher than pre-campaign | Repeat Purchase Rate: 68% (maintained and growing) | LTV improvement: 2.8x through subscription retargeting | Top creative: "First meal reaction" dog UGC | Best campaign: Advantage+ Shopping.

Key Takeaways for D2C Dog Food Brands on Meta

1. Pet UGC — especially health transformation and first-reaction videos — is among the most emotionally powerful and highest-converting content on Meta. 2. Broad PMF testing often uncovers high-value buyer segments you weren't originally targeting. 3. For consumable products with high reorder potential, subscription retargeting can multiply LTV more significantly than any new customer acquisition improvement. 4. Vet and expert Partnership Ads shorten the trust gap for health and wellness pet products in ways brand ads simply cannot.
