Wall art is a fundamentally discovery-based category: people rarely wake up looking for wall art, but they see it styled in a room on Instagram and suddenly can't imagine their home without it. Running product-only ads in this category — isolated art prints against white backgrounds, product specs, price-led copy — misses this entirely. This D2C Indian handmade wall art brand had a 1.8x ROAS and product carousels that failed to inspire. Ho Digital rebuilt their strategy around the discovery experience.
About the Brand
The brand sells original Indian handmade wall art — hand-painted canvases, digital prints, Madhubani art prints, and mixed-media pieces — directly through their Shopify store. Starting at ₹799 for art prints to ₹8,500 for large originals. Strong appeal to the Indian urban interior design community. Weak Meta Ads performance because the creative wasn't creating the discovery moment.
The Problem: Art Needs Context, Not a Catalogue
The existing creative strategy treated art like any other product: show the item, state the price, show a CTA. But wall art buyers make their decision emotionally — they need to see the piece in a room, styled with furniture, lighting, and complementary decor, before the desire to own it is triggered. A print photographed against a white wall or a studio background is art without a story. It won't move anyone.
The second problem was targeting: "wall art" and "home decor" interests cast too wide a net, pulling in buyers who'd buy a ₹299 mass-market print before ever considering original Indian handmade art. We needed to find the audience that specifically valued the handmade, the authentic, and the story behind the art — and speak to them through content that matched their aesthetic values.
Our Meta Ads Strategy
Phase 1: Discovery-Format Creative Testing
Four creative approaches tested: product-only images (control), room styling reveals (art shown in situ in a styled room), artist storytelling (the human behind the art, the process, the inspiration), and "blank wall to transformed room" transformation reels. Targeting: Indian home aesthetic community, interior design enthusiast, art appreciation and collector interests, and Broad 26–45 urban homeowners. Budget: ₹12,000/day for 10 days. Room transformation content and artist stories outperformed product carousels by 5x on CTR and 6x on ROAS.
Phase 2: Story and Transformation Content in Advantage+ Shopping
We moved room reveal and artist story content into Advantage+ Shopping at ₹25,000/day, integrating the catalog so buyers could click directly from an inspirational room reveal to purchase the specific art pieces shown. We also built a "curated collection by room" landing page (Living Room Art, Bedroom Art, Study/Office Art) — buyers who arrived from room-context content converted 3.1x better when landed on a curated room-type page vs the general shop page.
Phase 3: Retargeting Inspired Audiences
We built retargeting around inspiration signals: room reveal video savers (save = strong delayed purchase intent) received a personalised "the exact pieces you saved" retargeting carousel 3 days later. Specific art page visitors received artist story content and "only 3 remaining" inventory scarcity signals. Add-to-cart received gifting framing — "give someone original Indian art" — which opened new occasions and buyer intent segments. Previous buyers were retargeted for complementary pieces and new collection drops.
Creative Strategy: Room Reveals, Artist Stories, and Interior Creator Content
Hooks That Created Discovery and Desire
"Your blank wall is waiting for something. We have 500 original Indian pieces starting at ₹799." — discovery invitation with specific range and price anchor, 3.1% CTR. "The story behind this painting took 8 hours and 12 years of practice. It sells out every time we list it." — scarcity + artisan story hook, highest video completion rate. "Indian handmade art is having its moment. These are the 5 pieces everyone in the Indian home aesthetic community is buying right now." — trend-authority hook that positioned the brand as a taste-leader rather than a vendor, most shares (14.2K on one Reel). The artisan story creative generated 3x more saves than the room reveal — indicating that people connected with the human story as deeply as the aesthetic.
Room Reveal UGC and Multi-Piece Order Content
We ran a "share your wall art wall" programme — asking buyers to film a before-and-after of their wall transformation after receiving their art. These room reveal videos were authentic, varied, and showed the art in real Indian home contexts — studio apartments in Mumbai, traditional homes in Delhi, minimalist setups in Bangalore. Twenty room-reveal UGC pieces ran across paid campaigns and generated an average 4.8x ROAS as Partnership-adjacent content. Two pieces went organically viral in Indian interior design communities, generating 180K+ organic views.
Interior Design and Art Creator Partnership Ads
We partnered with 5 interior design and Indian home aesthetic creators (35K–220K followers) who transformed a room using the brand's art and documented the process. These ran as Partnership Ads — showing the art in the context of a real interior design project, with the creator's authentic voice explaining their selection rationale. Creator Partnership Ad CPM was 22% lower than brand-page placements, with a 5.2x higher save rate. Gifting content from 2 lifestyle creators (art as a thoughtful, personal gift) opened an entirely new buyer segment.
Results After 90 Days
Ad Spend: ₹80K/month | Revenue: ₹3.2L/month | ROAS: 4x | CTR: 0.6% → 3.1% | Average Order Value: ₹1,680 (multiple pieces per order) | Top creative: Artist process story Reel (highest save rate) | Best campaign: Advantage+ Shopping with room-context catalog integration | Gifting-segment purchases: 28% of total orders.
Key Takeaways for Wall Art Brands on Meta
1. Wall art is discovery-based — creative must create the "I need this in my room" moment, not just show the product. 2. Artist process and story content drives the highest save rate — saves are the strongest indicator of delayed purchase intent for art. 3. Room-type curated landing pages (living room, bedroom, study) dramatically outperform generic shop pages for buyers coming from contextual creative. 4. Gifting framing (personalised, meaningful, Indian handmade) opens a significant additional buyer segment beyond the primary interior design audience.
