This case study shows how a Pune-based D2C whey protein brand raised Meta ads ROAS from 2.1x to 5x by leading creative with NABL lab test reveals and independent third-party comparisons instead of standard fitness-model imagery — directly addressing the trust deficit caused by category-wide adulteration scandals.

The Indian whey protein and supplement market has a credibility crisis. Multiple high-profile adulteration scandals have made fitness audiences deeply sceptical of protein brands' claims — and rightfully so. When a buyer can't trust what's actually in the tub, premium price and bold ROAS claims mean nothing. This Pune-based D2C protein brand had genuinely clean, third-party tested products but a Meta Ads ROAS of 2.1x because they were making the same claims as every other brand. Ho Digital built their trust differently.
About the Brand
The brand makes whey protein concentrates, isolates, and plant-based proteins — all third-party tested by an accredited NABL lab and manufactured in an FSSAI-compliant facility. They publish full lab test results on their website. Clean label: no artificial colours, no undeclared fillers, no label-claim mismatch. Their problem was that this genuinely superior transparency story wasn't anywhere in their Meta Ads.
The Problem: Sceptical Audience, Generic Ads, and No Trust Architecture
The brand's existing Meta Ads ran standard protein category creative: muscular models, flavour close-ups, "25g protein per serving" callouts, discount offers. Indistinguishable from every adulterated brand running the same visual language. In a category where the audience has been deceived before, looking like everyone else is the fastest way to inherit the category's trust deficit. CTR was 0.9%, ROAS was 2.1x, and scaling spend only amplified the problem.
The missed asset: the brand's transparency story — NABL lab tests, FSSAI facility, full ingredient disclosure — was buried on page 6 of their website. No buyer would ever find it through an ad. Moving this transparency to the front of every creative piece of content was the single biggest lever available to the brand, and nobody had pulled it yet.
Our Meta Ads Strategy for a Trust-Deficit Protein Supplement Brand Category
Phase 1: Transparency Proof Testing
We built a test around proof of quality formats: NABL lab test result reveal (actual test document shown on screen), "I sent 8 protein brands to an independent lab — here are the results" comparison content, facility tour (FSSAI-compliant manufacturing walkthrough), transformation documentation (90-day results with clean protocol, no steroids, no other supplements), and clean label breakdown (what's in each scoop, what's not, and why it matters). Targeting: Fitness community (gym-goers, home gym buyers), Natural bodybuilding community, Health-conscious nutrition audiences, and Broad fitness 20–38. Budget: ₹20,000/day for 10 days.
Phase 2: Lab Transparency Content in Advantage+ Shopping
Lab test reveal and independent comparison content outperformed all other formats by a significant margin — CTR 4.1% vs 0.9% for standard protein ads, and purchase conversion rate 3.2x higher for audiences who saw the lab test creative. We moved the top 5 transparency creatives into Advantage+ Shopping at ₹65,000/day. We also introduced a subscription architecture: a 3-month protein subscription at 18% off, with a flexible pause option — this increased the per-customer commitment and dramatically improved LTV economics.
That's a subscription-first economics model we've also built for a specialty coffee brand — different category, same insight that first-purchase margin rarely matters as much as second-purchase certainty.
Phase 3: Cross-Sell Supplement Stack Retargeting
Protein buyers who had already established trust were the most receptive cross-sell audience. We built a supplement stack retargeting funnel: protein buyers at day 20 received a creatine recommendation (with the same lab transparency proof), day 40 received a pre-workout or BCAA add-on, and day 60 received a health blood panel offer (partner lab, positioned as "track your progress beyond the mirror"). This cross-sell sequence achieved 44% supplement stack adoption among existing protein buyers, dramatically multiplying per-customer revenue.
Creative Strategy: Lab Transparency Hooks, Transformation UGC, and Clean-Label Creator Content
Hooks That Overcame Category Scepticism
"I sent 8 popular protein brands to an independent lab. Here's what I found — and one brand genuinely surprised me." — independent third-party comparison hook, 4.1% CTR, highest cold-audience trust and purchase conversion rate. "This brand shows you their NABL lab test result. I couldn't find a single other protein brand willing to do this." — scarcity of transparency as a hook, built brand authority by making the claim verifiable. "90 days. No gym coach. No other supplements. Just this protein and a 3-day training plan. Here's the honest documented result." — transformation with specific clean protocol constraints that addressed the "is it just steroids?" scepticism head-on. The lab test comparison hook was the most shared piece of content (18K shares), spreading the transparency story organically far beyond paid reach.
Transformation Documentation and Lab UGC
We built a transformation UGC programme with a strict protocol: participants tracked their progress on video using only the brand's protein, a publicly available training programme, and no other supplements or performance enhancers. Monthly check-ins were uploaded to a private portal and then used as content at the 30/60/90-day mark. The documented, protocol-constrained transformation content was far more credible than standard "before/after" photography — audiences could see the consistency of the protocol and the authenticity of the results. Brands without an existing 90-day customer cohort to document can still get help sourcing protocol-constrained transformation footage from real customers rather than relying on stock before/after content
Natural Bodybuilding and Clean Supplement Creator Partnership Ads
We partnered with 4 natural bodybuilding creators (tested and certified natural athletes, 20K–150K followers) and 3 fitness nutrition creators who specifically advocated for clean supplement use. Their audience was already the exact high-trust buyer segment the brand needed. Partnership Ads from natural athletes' accounts — with their natural athlete credentials visible — provided borrowed credibility that no supplement brand could create through its own marketing alone. Creator CPM was 21% lower than brand-page ads, with 3.8x higher purchase conversion rates from their pre-qualified, trust-primed audience.
It's the same borrowed-credibility mechanic that worked for a pet food brand leaning on vet partnerships — in any health-adjacent category, an audience trusts a qualified third party faster than it trusts the brand itself
Meta Ads Results For Whey Protein Brand After 90 Days: 2.1x to 5x ROASs
Ad Spend: ₹2L/month | Revenue: ₹10L/month | ROAS: 5x | CTR: 0.9% → 4.1% | Subscription Rate: 32% (of first-time protein buyers) | Cross-sell Supplement Adoption: 44% | Lab test comparison video: 18K shares (highest organic amplification of any brand content) | Top creative: "I tested 8 brands" independent comparison reel | Best campaign: Advantage+ Shopping | LTV improvement (protein + stack cross-sell): 3.2x single-product buyer LTV.
Key Takeaways for Protein and Supplement Brands on Meta
In a category with active trust erosion, transparency and third-party proof are not marketing tactics — they are the brand positioning.
Lab test reveals and independent comparisons generate the highest CTR and lowest cost-per-purchase of any supplement creative format.
Natural athlete Partnership Ads deliver pre-qualified, trust-primed audiences that convert at 3x+ the rate of generic fitness interest targeting.
A supplement stack cross-sell sequence for existing protein buyers can triple per-customer LTV — the highest-leverage revenue growth available to supplement brands after the first purchase.
There's an organic version of this same trust play worth building too — getting cited as the verifiably clean option when someone asks an AI platform which protein brands are actually tested, rather than relying on paid reach alone to make that case
If your protein or supplement brand is making claims no one believes because the category has a trust problem, transparency is your competitive moat. Book a free performance audit with Ho Digital — we build evidence-first Meta strategies for health and supplement brands.
