Office stationery is one of the most sensory purchase categories in D2C — buyers want to feel the paper weight, hear the pen write, see the notebook open on a beautiful desk. When you try to sell this experience through a flat product image on Meta, you lose 90% of that purchase trigger. This premium D2C stationery brand had a 2.1x ROAS and a targeting mix of office managers and corporate buyers — neither of whom would ever buy their aesthetic, persona-driven products. Ho Digital found their real audience and the creatives that spoke to them.
About the Brand
This case study shows how a premium D2C stationery brand increased Meta ads ROAS from 2.1x to 4x by switching from product-photo ads to ASMR unboxing and desk-setup UGC content, targeting aesthetic and productivity-identity audiences instead of office-supply buyers.
The brand sells premium notebooks, planners, pen sets, and desk accessories — products with beautiful design, quality materials, and a clear aesthetic identity (clean, minimal, motivated). Their products were genuinely distinctive and had a passionate organic fanbase among students, content creators, and productivity enthusiasts who valued the "aesthetic workspace" experience.
The Problem: Wrong Meta Ads Targeting for D2C Stationery
The existing Meta Ads were targeting "office supplies" and "stationery" interest audiences — a segment dominated by bulk corporate buyers researching the cheapest per-unit cost, not individual buyers paying ₹450 for a beautiful notebook. The creatives were product-only shots against white backgrounds — visually correct but emotionally dead in a feed where aesthetic content dominates.
The right buyer for this brand wasn't searching for stationery — they were following aesthetic desk setup accounts on Instagram, watching "study with me" content on YouTube, and curating their workspace as a reflection of their identity and productivity values. We needed to find them in their native content environment and speak the language they already understood.
Our Meta Ads Strategy for a D2C Stationery Brand
Phase 1: Audience Re-targeting and Creative Format Testing
We rebuilt targeting around aesthetic and productivity identities: Study/Student community, Productivity and planning enthusiasts, "Clean desk aesthetic" adjacent interests, Content creator workspace community, and Broad 18–32 with creative-led filtering. Creative formats tested: product-only (control), ASMR unboxing (paper sounds, pen on paper, notebook flip), desk setup reveals, "what's in my planner" productivity content, and "aesthetic workspace under ₹2,000" compilation. Budget: ₹10,000/day for 10 days.
Phase 2: ASMR and Setup Content Into Advantage+ Shopping
ASMR unboxing content and desk setup reveals significantly outperformed all other formats — CTR 3x higher than product shots, ROAS 2.6x better. We moved the top 5 creatives into Advantage+ Shopping Automation at ₹22,000/day. We also created a "complete desk setup" bundle featuring 5–6 products together, which increased AOV from ₹620 (single notebook) to ₹1,840 (full desk set). Instagram became the primary acquisition channel, accounting for 74% of all attributed purchases.
Phase 3: Retargeting the Aesthetic and Productivity Audience
Retargeting leveraged the high save rate of setup content as a purchase-intent signal: video savers and specific product page visitors received bundle offers and "complete the look" suggestions. Students approaching exam season or year-end got a "new year, new planner" urgency creative. Existing buyers were retargeted for refill purchases (spare notebook inserts, new pen sets) and new collection launches — turning single-purchase buyers into recurring customers for the most popular high-reorder SKUs.
Creative Strategy: ASMR Hooks, Desk Reveals, and Productivity Creator Content
Hooks That Worked in the Aesthetic Stationery Space
"ASMR: Opening a brand new notebook feels like this." — sensory immersion hook with paper-flip and pen-on-page sounds, 3.2% CTR, highest save rate of any tested creative (24K saves). "The stationery brand that made me genuinely look forward to Monday morning planning." — identity and habit transformation hook, 2.9% CTR, highest purchase conversion rate. "Aesthetic desk setup under ₹2,000. Everything in this video is from one brand." — specific value + bundled solution, highest AOV conversion and most effective for getting first-time buyers to purchase multiple items together.
Desk Setup and Study Aesthetic UGC
We built a UGC programme for brand targeting students, content creators, and productivity influencers who were already building their aesthetic workspaces. We offered products in exchange for authentic workspace reveal content — no scripts, no brand talking points, just real desk setups featuring our products. Twenty-two creators participated in the first round; their content generated 4.8M organic impressions across Instagram, and the top 8 videos were amplified as paid Partnership Ads.
Productivity and Study Creator Partnership Ads
We partnered with 6 productivity and study content creators (25K–200K followers) who regularly created "planner setup," "study with me," and "my workspace" content. These were run as Partnership Ads — the creator's audience trusted their setup recommendations far more than any brand ad. Creator CPM averaged 18% lower than brand campaigns, with a 3.4x higher engagement rate. The productivity creator audience also had a 62% higher AOV than the general Meta audience, indicating stronger purchase intent for premium stationery.

Key Takeaways for Premium Stationery Brands on Meta
Aesthetic and sensory product categories need sensory creative — ASMR-style content converts significantly better than product photography for stationery and desk accessories.
Targeting by identity (aesthetic workspace enthusiast, productivity person) outperforms category interest targeting (office supplies) for premium, persona-driven products.
Bundle and "complete setup" creatives dramatically increase AOV for complementary product catalogues.
Save rate is the strongest purchase-intent signal for aspirational products — retarget your savers with bundle offers.
